Helping Preserve & Protect Your Vision

Even if you can see clearly, problems can develop in your eye and threaten your vision. Many diseases can lead to severe vision loss if left untreated, and an early diagnosis is crucial for your ocular health. While eye disease can be hard to identify alone, we can work to diagnose these problems in their earliest stages.

We test for several eye diseases during every exam, helping to protect your vision. Visit one of our locations, and we can help diagnose and manage eye disease.

The Importance of an Early Diagnosis

An early diagnosis can help protect your eye health and vision from eye disease. Many diseases can develop with limited symptoms, making them hard to identify. Eye disease can silently progress until it affects your vision if it isn’t diagnosed.

You don’t want to wait until your vision is affected to seek help from your optometrist. An early diagnosis can help reduce your risk of vision loss, and the only way to identify these problems is during an eye exam. We can identify eye disease in its earliest stages, helping us treat an eye problem as early as possible.

Creating Your Treatment Plan

We have experience treating and managing eye disease. Everyone’s vision situation is unique, so we create a customized treatment plan for each patient. Our team will recommend the treatments we feel are best for your eye health and vision needs. We can create a treatment plan after diagnosing an eye problem during a comprehensive eye exam. We’ll find a treatment suited for your needs, whether it’s medications, eye drops, or surgery.

Common Eye Diseases

There are many different ocular diseases, but age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma are some of the most common.

Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a disease affecting your macula, the part of your eye responsible for central (straightforward) vision. This disease can lead to vision loss as the macula loses the cells needed to see. Eventually, you may struggle to read or complete other daily tasks.

Treating this disease depends on the type of AMD you have. Dry and wet AMD require different treatments to help manage this disease. We can determine what form of AMD you have and recommend a treatment plan.

A cataract develops when your eye’s lens begins to harden. Cataracts occur when the lens becomes stiff and cloudy with time because proteins and fibers in the lens break down and clump together.

This cloudy lens worsens with time, making everyday tasks progressively harder. A stronger prescription can help at first, but many patients require cataract surgery to see clearly again.

Diabetic retinopathy is a disease where swelling and leaking blood vessels in the retina damage your vision. This disease affects patients with diabetes and develops when your blood sugar is too high for long periods. Vision issues occur when damaged blood vessels swell and leak fluid and blood into the retina.

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage your optic nerve, placing your vision at risk. The optic nerve is an essential part of your vision, and damage to this nerve can lead to irreversible vision loss. An early diagnosis can help protect your sight, but glaucoma can develop with little to no visible symptoms.

While the different types of glaucoma don’t develop in the same way, many raise your intraocular pressure (IOP). We measure your IOP during every eye exam using tonometry, a test to check your eye’s internal pressure. We use applanation, non-contact, and iCare tonometry at our practice.
